Any chance of getting Empyreal Paradox changed to Sky Fortress Bahamut out of the selectable stages for striking, assuming people vote for it?

Many of the EU tourneys thus far have proved how ridiculous things get with that giant crystal that you can't quick-move on for some reason. SFB seems like a much smarter choice since it's a more balanced stage.

If not SFB, then World of Darkness would be just as good.

The reasons for using these maps were outlined during the time when Phoenix was discussed and here they are:

In short, the stages were chosen in such a way to provide a different environment in each and to provide a fighting chance to all types of characters. Two cramped, two open (vertical and horizontal), and one in the middle.

Prima Vista: Small but open. Its height not as low as PT's, and its width not as limiting as EoM's diameter. It sports two levels to not leave an opponent completely at the mercy of a cqc fighter that has chosen that stage. Generally sports to ground, close-ranged and wallrushing characters. Depending on the character, some aerial combat can still take place.

Pandaemonium: Cramped map. Plenty of pockets of cramped spaces to hide behind, but also holds central area with little ground and a generous breathing space for a small map when compared to others of its size. Also includes a floor warp. Generally supports ground, close-ranged and wallrushing characters, but also provides an area for some aerial combat and gives room for long range attacks that spawn where the enemy is, while providing cover for the caster.

Lunar Subterrane: Open, horizontal map. The ceiling isn't high enough to completely force a ground character into the air. Aerial characters will have no problems ceiling rushing, but ground characters won't have trouble finding ground to do the same against the floor. Generally sports to aerial, long-range, and chasing styles. However due to its limited height, wallrushing and some ground characters can still function.

Old Chaos Shrine: Open, vertical map. Unlike the Lunar Subterrane, it offers a floor that allows some characters to use as a shield and as a spacing mechanism. The niches at the bottom of the map also allows for hiding and floor/wall rushing--an element LS doesn't house. Mostly provides for aerial, long-range fighters. However, ground and wallrushing characters can still try taking the fight to the bottom of the stage.

Empyreal Paradox: Medium sized map. Ideally, the thought that chose this over a few other maps that could fit the bill was that it had a little bit of everything. A high ceiling for aerial characters, and a smaller radius than normal for ground characters. The crystal in the middle doesn't allow for the same type of aerial assault from the ceiling that open maps allow for. A map that can provide an environment for all styles--ground and aerial, wallrushing, close-range and long range.

The answer to your specific question is in the "Empyreal Paradox" section.
Also the set of these three tournaments is not a one off, but is used to prepare and allow people to practice for a Major Tournament that will be appearing sometime this summer. So I would like to keep the ruleset as close as possible to something that would be used for the Majors. This is a chance for new players to come in to have a taste of what a Major would be like in terms of a rule-set and competition. It also allows old timers to get their rust off. Also this set may add valuable material on match-ups since this will be a competitive environment and you are welcomed to try out and put your theories to the test.

Would further discussion regarding Empyreal Paradox's inclusion in the stage striking system be of any use, or is this something that will not be changed under any circumstances? I would like to contest the legitimacy of the current stance on Empyreal Paradox's reasons for inclusion, but not if it serves as either a waste of time and energy or to be considered unproductive in the first place.

Sure go ahead provide your reasoning and it would be up for consideration. As it stands now the benefits outweigh the arguments provided by ChaosMuramasa.

The reason I am sticking with these stages because there have been no problems or major complaints and a lot of time went into thinking about those choices.

I'll just say I've always been a fan of SFB as an initial stage strike pick since it's a very decent neutral stage with various elements that a lot of the cast can use.

The ceilings are not too low, but not overly high. The walls have good space but still usable in combos with proper spacing. There is a very solid ground area. There are fluxuations in ground level (up and downward travel). There are banish traps and open spaces where grounded combat can be semi-avoided. There are quick move areas. There are high perches. There are low areas. There are places to find cover. The stage also gives players room to breath if they need to play that style, but CQC characters can also use certain elements to their advantage. Horizontal spacing is always an option but it does take more finesse (not a bad thing) than in larger stages. Vertical spacing is much the same.

All in all I find it a very solid stage with something to offer to most of the cast. I honestly don't see a reason not to have it in outside of some very specific characters (and even then, it's not a bad stage for them - just not ideal).

One thing that I hate about EP is quick moves... I detest that a "default" stage is would limit a potentially very important tactic (match up dependent). Also, the ceiling is one of the highest in the game which I think kind of offsets its intent as a good "neutral" stage.

ChaosMuramasa
03-23-2012, 11:01 PM
Vey's post pretty much sums up exactly how I feel. Navigating near the top of that crystal with no way to actually move on is hardly something neutral. Characters like Kefka and Ultimecia can just stay at the top all day and you've have no way to get to them aside from dashing thanks to the lack of quick-moving.

Thanks for the input guys. After thinking it over, I have decided to use Sky Fortress Bahamut instead of Empyreal Paradox.

For all those who have attended, thanks for participating in this custom. It was one hell of a watch. Huge thanks to the commentators and Chaos for streaming the entire event live. It was an eight hour stream. Thanks guys for not bailing out! Here's to the Grand Finals in being just as enjoyable.

Don't forget to send in your replays if you have participated in this event. We'll be uploading them to the official channel. Send them to thedissidiaforums@gmail.com

Thanks Spyder and Narolf for helping host this tournament. Thanks to the streaming team and commentators (ChaosMuramasa, Khell, Aether, Shuru) as you have done an awesome job and endured for 8 hours long. Thanks Chaos for taking charge at times to steer the tournament on track with blind pick assistance and pacing. I appreciate the contribution and I hope you have enjoyed it as much as others and I have enjoyed watching. I also have to say I am very satisfied how this tournament went so far in terms of smoothness and how the participants were able to keep track of their matches and quickly executed them. Thanks to all the participants for making this happen and awesome games.

Had a blast streaming this. The matches were insane (Dart-Prishe VS. Hollowed-Gab on Lunar / Ultima-Cloud VS. Hollowed-Cecil on Top Floor being the very definitions of hype) and the action was intense. The crowd was hyped, the commentators were great, and many laughs were had. Not to mention the after-hours show was just about as silly as Dissidia can get, and I loved every minute of it.

I'd also like to thank everyone who watched, seeing as how the stream's high point of 41 viewers around five to six hours in (right when the best part started) was a marvelous achievement. That amount beats my regular viewer count (15~20) but a margin so high that it's crazy. I'm glad that this many people were so into the event. It made it all a lot more lively and it made it that much fun.

The greatest part of it all is that we're still not done. I'll catch all you cool cats tomorrow night at 9PM EST for the undoubtedly exciting conclusion. It'll be something else, I'm sure. Can't wait. As for now, I think I'll go get a well-deserved rest after streaming for 11 and a half hours total (including After-Hours stuff).

EDIT: A note to Spyder and Draec: when you get around to uploading this tournament, let me know which matches you don't have. I recall some of the really high-velocity and critical matches being too long to save. I can rip them from my stream and you can edit them in with the other converted fights. The quality is going to take a pretty serious hit, but having the fight is better than nothing. You'll also have the commentation over it, which is a nice bonus.

TKG09
04-08-2012, 12:57 PM
I think we should keep the stream version for every match for the amazing commentary.

Or use the replays then mute them then put the corresponding sound from the stream.

Khell
04-08-2012, 06:12 PM
We can't guarantee that the quality for audio will be any good from the stream, or we would likely just rip the entire thing from the stream ourselves.

Chaos says we had a blast, and that's not even the right set of words for it. I look forward to escaping this family related prison and watching the grand finals tonight. :P On a similar note, I'm glad you guys enjoyed our commentary... We're trying to appear "professional" while still being funny, and it seems to be working. But you could feel the fatigue once we hit the last few sets XD

Shuruka
04-08-2012, 06:33 PM
yes, the problem with the stream rips is that it suffers a huge quality loss. on a side note: the fatigue, omg. a combined feeling of only having one meal all day, and commentating for 8 hours straight (then another 4) was killing me, but it was really fun, and I hope you all enjoyed it, hit me up if you want me to commentate any events, or if you have any matches (serious ones) that you would like A-ther and I to host on our channel ReplayRollCall.

Wonderful work all of you participants, I was very impressed, and the hype, omg the hype? the hype, omg, the hype. these matches were intense, I loved every minute of it from start to finish, Hollowed my bro, dat gabranth is top tier. Dart, still rockin your characters, and doing it right. ultima, as always, you never disappoint. Dante, you're rockin that squall, you need some work but I'm quite impressed, keep it up bro, i see great things for you. everyone did great and I can't wait for tonight to watch and commentate these grand finals matches between ultima and dart. I expect great things.

04-08-2012, 07:15 PM
I think the audio was fine, at least i could understand what you guys was saying, nice work everyone... And actually, i am watching the rest of the stream now... because 8 hours straight... just you guys xD

And keeping using rainbow Squall!!!!!

So, I've started uploading last night stream's to Youtube. It's divided into six parts, and to my shocking surprise, the quality is actually surprisingly sharp for a stream rip. The sounds a bit low, but that's easily resolved by pumping your speakers up as opposed to quality which isn't resolvable, so I'm satisfied.

Spyder

Yes. Please carefully read through the rules. Everything is covered there.

http://dissidiaforums.com/showthread.php?11799-Infinites

A move or a set of moves cannot be repeated more than once if the opponent has no opportunity to escape.

END
05-27-2012, 06:48 AM
I read it, I just wanted to make sure where that stands. Alrighty, so what if I say don't do dash out for a second thunder crest, but do thunder Crest> Bombard> Yuna Assist> Thunder Crest> Flare?

I think that something like that is no different than most other combos as long as I don't do the whole dashing thing to add on another thunder crest. Though I may be mistaken on my viewpoint of this rule. :X

Spyder
05-27-2012, 06:54 AM
Thunder Crest> Bombard> Assist > follow up is safe. So long as you don't repeat the same string of attacks or the same attack without an assist, it's a legal combo. The idea is not to make a combo out of the same attack or string of attacks that lead to an infinite.

String A > Assist > String A is safe.

String A > String A > Assist > String A is not.

I like how my script was special enough for a mention. I'm honored. XD

Grats specifically to LXD and Sok... Very nice work getting your names recognized here (finally!)

FEPs gets my vote.

As far as what maps I believe should always be used for stage striking: Prima Vista, Sky Fortress Bahamut, Old Chaos Shrine

These three stages are all around great for having balance in striking and the not so obvious strike they give as well. For team wars, running these three stages along with two more, which can be discussed hopefully sooner than later, would be a good idea. I feel Kefka's Tower and Dream's End have been put off for testing long enough. Maybe we can start with these five.

I definitely agree with Prima Vista and Sky Fortress Bahamut as two of the better stages to strike with. After that, it's a little more hazy since it's hard to tell whether people are striking because of comfort or striking because they actually want an advantage... Stages like Empyreal Paradox and Order's Sanctuary are advantageous to certain characters because of the massive height and the massive sea of floor beneath the characters. I think that for striking, starting with the basic Prima/SFB/X trio (X being another very balanced stage, perhaps offering something that the other two don't) would be wonderful, then you can provide an obvious ground/wall rush oriented stage (like Pandaemonium) and an obvious air/chase oriented stage (like Crystal World or Dream's End).

If I had to put a vote forth for a set of stages to try out for balance, it would likely be the following:

Pandaemonium (original), Dream's End, Prima Vista, Sky Fortress Bahamut, Lunar Subterrane.

I know many people don't like Lunar Subterrane's uneven floor, but it's probably (in my opinion) one of the most balanced stages remaining to the game after taking out Prima and Sky Fortress.

Lunar Subterrane remains a very balanced stage but is somewhat similar to SFB. Both low ceilings and long horizontally. Although I do like the idea of combining the two, which would make striking more strategical and less predictable. This is where Old Chaos Shrine comes in.
