Okay people, it’s time for the fourth tournament in the CA series to be announced – Contentio Aeterna – Alacrity!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eRRRUrTfso&feature=g-all-lik
Thanks again to Skye for this beautiful advertisement!
As always, you do not need to be part of an existing Team Wars team in order to participate.
Requirements:
All participants will be required to have a NA copy of Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy, as well as access to NA Ad-Hoc Party. Additionally, at least one member of each team is required to be present on the #DDFFCasual IRC channel. For those lacking IRC webclients, the link to the channel may be located here. Teams that are unable to meet this requirement will be disqualified. The tournament begins at 7PM EST. Players are urged to be early by 15 minutes or more if possible. If you expect that you will be running late, please contact one of the TOs to warn us of the situation. If a team cannot participate in their first round match by 7:30 PM EST that team will forfeit their first round match and drop into the Loser's Bracket. Teams who are then not able to participate in their second match by the time the rest of the second round matches conclude will be disqualified from the tournament. If you do not turn up on time and your partner does, you may be replaced to allow the tournament to continue smoothly.
A link to the IRC channel can be found here: http://webchat.irchighway.net/?channels=DDFFCasual
The following restrictions also apply:
1) If you have been banned from the forum within the last month you may be barred from participating. (This will be discussed with Dissidia Forums moderators to determine the severity of the ban and the reason.)
2) If you are banned from the IRC channel (#DDFFCasual) you will be barred from participating.
Basic Rules:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/onistardust/OFFICIALRULES.pnghttp://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/onistardust/assistsbanned2.pnghttp://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/onistardust/JOBCLASSESBANNED.pnghttp://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/onistardust/FERALCHAOSBANNED.pnghttp://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/onistardust/omegastagesbanned2.png http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/onistardust/cheatsbanned.png
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/onistardust/ragequit2.png
Regarding rage quit disqualifications: A first offense ends in a disqualification from the round. A second offense ends in a disqualification from the tournament. Forfeiting or disconnecting the match before the final blow constitutes are rage quitting.
Match Procedure:
Individual matches will be best of 5 using a Round Robin 3 Group Battle system. The third match will be considered a placeholder that serves only to simplify procedures, and will not be considered a part of the tournament. I will outline an example of matches below:
Round 1 – Kurayami & ChaosMuramasa vs Kayarine & Khell
Set 1
Kurayami (Garland) vs Kayarine (Bartz) = Kurayami (Garland) 1-0
ChaosMuramasa (Squall) vs Khell (Golbez) = Khell (Golbez) 1-1
[Placeholder] (Either player forfeits)
Set 2
ChaosMuramasa (Squall) vs Kayarine (Firion) = Kayarine (Firion) 1-2
Kurayami (Garland) vs Khell (Shantotto) = Kurayami (Garland) 2-2
[Placeholder]
Set 3
ChaosMuramasa (Squall) vs Khell (Golbez) = ChaosMuramasa (Squall) 3-2
[Placeholder]
[Placeholder]
*New*- All matches will be best of 5; this includes Finals too -*New*
In the event that a team reaches the 3 win mark, no further matches need to be played.
Stage Striking and Counterpicking Procedure:
Before a match takes place, it will be necessary for each team involved to contact their assigned Tournament Organizer. The TO you contact will be given to you in the #DDFFCasual channel. The following steps are then to be taken in order to ensure matches are run smoothly.
Set 1:
1) Both teams send their characters and player order to the TO via query. [Example: Kurayami (Garland), ChaosMuramasa (Squall).]
2) The TO will select either team leader and provide a coin flip to determine who goes first in the stage striking procedure. The team leader selected will call either heads or tails, and the one that called it correctly will strike first.
3) The player that strikes first will choose from the following stages: Lunar Subterrane, Crystal World, Order's Sanctuary, Pandaemonium - Top Floor, M.S. Prima Vista.
4) The TO will send the list of remaining stages to the other team who will perform step 3. This will repeat until a single stage remains. The stage selected will be played on the first round. (Example: Team A strikes Lunar, Team B strikes Prima Vista, Team A strikes Crystal World, Team B strikes Top Floor, play on Order's Sanctuary.)
5) Repeat steps 3-5 and change striking order (team who struck second will now strike first).
6) The TO will announce the selected stages and characters. The two teams will then proceed to play their matches.
After Set 1, the team who won the right to strike first in Match 1 will change player order. The other team will remain in the same order. (For example, if Kura and Chaos won the toss, they will switch order while Khell and Kaya stay in the same order.)
Set 2:
1) Both teams will send their character choices to the TO via query.
2) The team who lost Match 1 in Set 1 will choose the stage for Match 1 in Set 2 via query to the TO.
3) The team who lost Match 2 in Set 1 will choose the stage for Match 2 in Set 2 via query to the TO.
4) The TO will announce the selected stages and characters. The two teams will then proceed to play their matches.
In the event of a 2-2 tie after Set 2 is complete, follow the procedure for Set 3:
Set 3:
1) Teams will send a player choice to the TO via query. If a player has won both of their matches in the current set, they are restricted from participating in the tiebreaker. This prevents a team from being carried by a single player.
2) The TO will announce the two players participating in the third set
3) The two players will send their character picks to the TO in query
4) Repeat Steps 2-4 from Set 1's striking procedure to choose a stage for the tiebreaker.
5) The TO will announce the selected stage and characters. The tiebreaker may be played.
Reporting Match Results
When a match is finished, one of the winning team members should contact their TO and report the result of the match. Please use the following format (or something similar):
Set 1
Kurayami (Garland) vs Kayarine (Bartz) [Crystal World] = Kurayami (Garland) 1-0
ChaosMuramasa (Squall) vs Khell (Golbez) [Lunar Subterrane] = Khell (Golbez) 1-1
Set 2
ChaosMuramasa (Squall) vs Kayarine (Firion) [Order’s Sanctuary] = Kayarine (Firion) 1-2
Kurayami (Garland) vs Khell (Shantotto) [Crystal World] = Kurayami (Garland) 2-2
Set 3
ChaosMuramasa (Squall) vs Khell (Golbez) [Pandaemonium – Top Floor] = ChaosMuramasa (Squall) 3-2
Team A (Kurayami and ChaosMuramasa) win 3-2.
TOs will post results in this thread and the bracket will be updated accordingly.
Saving Replays:
It is requested (NOT required) that all players save replays whenever possible. Replays from the tournament are asked to be sent to DDFFCasual@gmail.com, so that we may have the tournament uploaded. For those uncertain of how to accomplish this, please look at this thread (http://dissidiaforums.com/showthread.php?11073-Sending-replays) for details.
Regarding Disconnections:
If players become disconnected, it is expected that they attempt to resume play on the same stages and the same characters. In the event that players cannot connect via group battle, it is recommended that teams split into separate AHP houses and attempt to play their matches in the Single Player lobbies. If you still have a problem with connecting with one of your opponents, contact your TO.
Signup Format:
Players: Player A + Player B
PSN: Player A's PSN + Player B's PSN
Time Zone: Player A's Timezone + Player B's Timezone
Team: Team Name
Team Represented: Player A's DF Team + Player B's DF Team (if you are not a member of a team, just put None. If both players are part of the same team, just put it once.)
The tournament will begin on May 25th and end on May 26th. If necessary, May 27th will be used.
Loser's Finals and Grand Finals will be played on the same night.

I am aware of this, but I had to leave unexpectedly so was not able to make such an announcement... also, 5PM is when it starts; there isn't a specific new deadline. If people fail to see it, it's not a big loss - they can just play their matches at the normal time. It's just my hope that some people see it so we can get a few matches done early. Apologies for the inconvenience.

I guess that works. I don't approve of changing the rules of a tournament, but this isn't going to have a negative impact by the looks of it, so meh.

The TOs and some participants would prefer it to be played over 3 days. If Army of Two or The Lion & The Educator won, they'd have to potentially play a total of 5 sets tonight, which would be a bit of a drag. As such, we're splitting it over 3 days.

Withdrawing due to confusion caused by a misunderstanding of the rules with the TOs. Next time a tournament is run, I hope the TOs have a complete understanding of what they're doing.

Read the first post next time.
Same as CA:003, as it's directly copy-pasted.

The method you were using was different from the method that every other TO employed and was identical to the method of blind picks. A better explanation of what your intentions were would have avoided this misunderstanding.

While there is a paper-trail to the rules and such; stuff happens.
Please increase inter-TO communication since these inconsistencies were very annoying. I am aware that yesterday a different CP process was used regardless of what the rules said. Using different CP methods across rounds was very unprofessional.

After a TO discussion, it was concluded that me and Kaya were TOing as per the rules in first post, and some others were TOing using Team Wars rules... hence the false impression Garuga was under.
SHURU will be replacing Garuga as Soul's teammate.

You were the only one directly asking for the stages and characters as they were selected. Every other TO either asked to be queried the finalized stages/characters or simply waited to be queried this information instead. It would be worth pointing out that it's up to the teams to do exactly that in the rules, not the TO to request this information. Moreover, I was on more than long enough for you to explain it, and when I assumed it was blind picks, you said nothing to deny it, furthering the misunderstanding. I have little enough patience for misunderstandings when it comes to tournaments, and it is only worsened by the self-admitted inconsistencies regarding the time frame to finish the tournament. These factors, along with the growing impatience at how long it took you to respond, led to my withdrawal.

I don't see how asking or requesting for it makes any difference to the match. The act of the TO asking for information does not change the characters or stages picked... the information is required, so it was requested. Some people don't know the drill, so need to be prompted.

I'd like to apologize to everyone for the inconvenience. Khell and Shuru used team challenges rules because they were used to TOing over them and forgot that Contentio Aeterna runs different rules for character and stage picks. This is the reason for the inconsistency. I would have tried to avoid this if I was aware that there was a possibility of this happening, but I didn't see it coming at all because I was not aware of the different picking rules team challenges employ.
I realize this was indeed a big mistake from the TO's, but we hope to improve and run the next Contentio Aeterna installment smoothly. I'm sorry for all that happened, again.

I have already informed you that it seemed as if you were setting up a second blind pick, minus the stage striking, an impression that you did nothing to discourage. That is what led to the misunderstanding in the first place. As I already told you on the IRC, I think someone that's gone through the tournament for a day would know the procedure and does not need to be prompted to give information they already know is necessary, which only led to further confuse the details of your request when you asked for only some of the information necessary to announce the next set.

Set 2 is pretty much a second blind pick, yes; which is what me and Kaya were doing. Which was correct, as it says in the rules. It seems a couple of the others were using Team Wars rules, as Kaya already stated, resulting in the confusion.

i apologize for this inconsistency, I am deeply dissapointed in myself, and will adress that this is partially my fault, and partially khells, however, this wont be happening again, we'll make SURE to follow our own rules.
on another note, the decision we have come to about this will never be repeated. as from now on, teams deal with thier bullshit as a team, your teamate DQs, you get dqed with them. this time was only for the sake of fairness, and it seems, we've been unfair to the team facing garuga's. it's quite upsetting to know that this is my fault, and I apologize once more.
never again. TO work as a team, teams, work as a team. from here on, this will be ruled with instant indifference and disqualification.

That would have been really helpful if you had explained it clearly on the IRC earlier. I have nothing else to say except that I expect the next tournament to be properly organized this time.

I wasn't able to type at that point in time... something came up IRL. I believe the problem lay in me not reinforcing the rules clearly enough. However, it is a completely human mistake to make, and i'll treat it as a lesson learnt.

Alright, here's the decisions the TO team agreed on:
Loser's Finals and Grand Finals will still happen. It'll start tomorrow at 7PM EST, so those who are still in the tournament, please show up at that time.
-
As a result of the inconsistency in the rules, no seeding points will be awarded. This means that this tournament won't count towards getting better seeding in brackets for the next Contentio Aeterna.
-
However, Contentio Aeterna prize signatures will still be reawarded to the top 3.
-
We'll be using the rules written in the first post (blind picks for set 2 and 3.) Here's a recap of the rules:

I'll take blame for the disorganization. I should've been clearer with my own practices to Kura as well as to the others, and I need to yet refine my steps to making sure everything runs smoothly. I'll be discussing this in length with everyone when I have a chance to make sure this doesn't happen again.
I apologize to all the participants and hope that this experience doesn't turn you off from wanting to participate in future tournaments.

We all take the blame; you and Shuru for not reading the first post again, me for not telling you to read the first post again... in the end, it's a group effort. Both the TOs AND the participants have to cooperate to make a good tournament, as a wise guy once told me. Shit happens.
Will all of these matches be uploded to the dissida fourm youtube account?

this tournament is sponsered by #DDFFCasual and not by the forums, so no, they'll be on the casuals channel (eventually)

A little late, but the important thing is that you all take something from this and come back stronger as TOs next time. No one is going to come out of the starting gate being flawless and amazing - in anything. Just learn from it and don't let it discourage you from coming back to the stage! No matter how uppity people might have gotten, anyone who understands the effort that goes into organizing events like this GREATLY appreciate the effort and time you guys are putting forth.

And there you have it folks; Contentio Aeterna ~ Alacrity is finished. Here are the finished brackets:
http://images.challonge.com/Alacrity.png
Congratulations to TrolloZoids for placing first, The Lion and the Educator for placing second, and Timon & Pumbaa for placing third. The matches were a blast to watch, and i'm sure they were a blast to play, too. Our graphicker should have your signatures done soon-ish, so we'll be waiting to hear from them to get the sigs to you.
We may have had some hiccups along the way, but this means that in future we'll know how to avoid making such mistakes. It's still a learning experience for us, and I hope you realise that this was only a one-off; next time, we'll be sure to be far more certain of exactly what needs to be done, and rules will be enforced in the proper fashion.
I'd like to thank my fellow TOs, Kayarine and Khell, for obviously helping me run the tournament, but also helping me to sort out the mess we found ourselves in. Our guest TO, Shuru, was also extremely helpful in the running of the tournament, and as well as TOing he provided some entertaining commentary. Thanks also go to ChaosMuramasa for his continued dedication towards streaming this event for everyone to watch and enjoy while having a laugh.
As I said, winners will be given their signatures as soon as they are completed. Thanks, guys.

Are those Squall players I see in top three? Much <3
This tournament has had one heck of a cast of players this time around. I faced off against players I've only heard about, and they've proved to be a great and entertaining challenge. Lots of surprises along the way, and I have to say the hiccup in the tournament didn't have any impact from me enjoying my matches. I had a blast.
As for the earlier confusion, it happens. The most important thing is how you handled it and what you took from it. You guys quickly organized together for swift action. I hope this event serves to better these tournaments, as I do look forward to seeing more. Keep patient and stay resilient, and you guys will improve.
With that said, congratulations to the top three and huge thanks to those who continuously put their time into organizing, streaming and commentating these events. Your effort and your time are greatly appreciated. Thanks for gathering and keeping our community together. :D
