Flare Star doesnt hit near the ceiling? (odd side effect) vid in post

OK so heres the situation I was farming duel colosseum the other day and came across kuja, proceed to fight him, he chases me up by the ceiling, I crash breaking the chase and he pulls out a quick flare star. Observe:

The HP portion of flare star never goes off but Im locked in the freeze from the beginning of the tack for the entirety of the fall down Planets core. Scared the hell out of me but the ai didnt capitalize. Its happened to me one other time, when I let off a knights axe at the same time as a flare star and guard crushed him out of the attack. again the first part had gone off and I was frozen. both times I fell into nothing and got ported back to ground after some brv damage but wonder what would happen if I had actually touched down on ground. would I just sit there frozen until hit out of it?
Anyone else encounter this before?

A number things could have happened, but it was hard to tell because of the camera. Flare Star can hit on the ceiling, I do it all the time actually, but the thing that comes to mind first as to why it didn't work in this case could be either; 1: She was still in the "getting of the wall" animation when Flare Star was activated, thus missing her in her super man frames, or 2) The axe hit Kuja before the Hit Box for Flare Star appeared.
