I'm gonna list some free alternatives to the very costly Photoshop program brands. I know a lot of people want to try the SOTW/AOTW contests or want to make Signatures/Avatars in general, but don't seem to have a very good image editor. So I decided to put up this list, to help out the ones that want to get involved.(You can always download the free trial of photoshop for 30 days, but I find that pretty stupid)
1. GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) (Recommended)
GIMP stands for “GNU image manipulation program”, and it is one of the oldest and most well known alternatives to Photoshop in existence. Although it doesn’t quite have all of them, you’ll find most of the features included in Photoshop somewhere in GIMP. (You can easily find signature tutorials for GIMP on making signatures - Google)
ALSO
GIMPShop (http://www.gimpshop.com/) is the same as GIMP, except the layout has been structured as close to Photoshop as possible, so anyone making the transition should still feel right at home.
2. Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/index.html)
Paint.NET has grown out of a simple replacement for the well known MSPaint into a fully featured open source image editor with a wide support base. You’ll need Windows to run Paint.NET
3. Pixia (http://www.ne.jp/asahi/mighty/knight/download.htm)
Pixia was originally designed for anime/manga community but has also been used in other branches of art. It is available in various languages. There are a lot of English tutorials available for you to get started with it
4. Active Pixel (direct DL) (http://www.idea-systems.net/ap4setup.exe)
This photo editor resembles Photoshop in many aspects, from the way menus and windows are laid out on its interface to the keyboard shortcuts used for many actions. Active Pixels also includes some extra embedded apps, such as a red-eye fixer, a picture browser and a screen capture tool.
That's all I got for now.
