View Full Version : Need some help against "Turtlers"

First off i wanna be on the same page, I say Turtlers as someone who plays very defensively, only blocks, and then hits you. Am i correct? If not please correct me (cuz im not very good with terms and such).
Ok, now i play against my friend, i obviously use Tidus, and he uses Squall. He actually is not that much better then me, but he always beats me because i get impatient, rush, he blocks, bp rapes me, and rinse and repeat. Anything I can do? Besides just waiting him out?

From my experience, just stay above him and keep throwing Jecht Shot, or dash in and try to fake him out. I had to fight a similiar defensive Squall who did damn near nothing except block and counter, I mixed up hopstep, dodge&throw and slice&dice.

I would say mixing up Dart & Weave with Hop Step is good
Dash in, get him to block
Dart & Weave
Rinse & repeat as needed

Running in and using Slice & Dice (Charge & Assault) should have similar effects
Basically, you want to abuse his block reflex. Hop step out of range, when he blocks hop step him again as the block animation is ending.
You just need to trick him into blocking when you aren't actually going to hit him, Snooze and Lose also doesn't hurt ;]

Turtles are easy. Just remember that humans can get pressured and nervous, use this to your advantage. Bring the pressure onto your opponent.

If you mix up Hop Step with Slice & Dice with other moves like Jecht Shot. The opponent will be thinking of when to block or dodge. When he's in his nervous state like that, he might block or dodge even when you're just dashing towards him. Punish him if he makes mistakes.

Now if he tries to go aggressive use those Dodge & _______ moves.

Prob with using the Dodge&____ moves to punish blocks is that even if you use the fastest one (which according to Nero is Dodge&Throw), you have to do it straight away, even a little before he blocks, because if not they have time to dodge away thanks to the delay, so you take a real big risk.

ITT: patience and equip Snooze&Lose/Concentration++.

I was suggesting that he use Dodge & ______ while his opp was attacking. But then again, Squall users tend to use the low delay attacks like Beat Fang and Solid Barrel. So yeah, that's a risk.

Squall has a harder time dealing with Turtlers due to lack of safe HP attacks.
But Tidus has a noticeable start up time with D&T and any other HP moves.
Best thing you wanna do? Turtle back at them.

A good turtler does not get pressured by Tidus because of all his HP attacks take time.
What you may wanna do is keep him busy with Snooze and lose (Get high up in the air and use Jecht Shot.) and once the opponent reaches low Brave try to block his attack. Once you have enough brave there is no reason for the opponent to feel pressured by BRV attacks.

Keep in mind YOU HAVE TO USE JECHT SHOT AT A PROPER DISTANCE, Or you'll get punished

If you're playing with EX Counter you can bait your opponent in attacking you during a missed Jecht Shot or Energy Rain or Slice and Dice. Activate EX mode during the recovery animation when you're about to get hit to continue the HP animation.


Squall has alot of HP openings, Rough Divide is definitely one that Tidus can take advantage of. Once Squall activates Rough Divide, Dodge away from Squall right away no hesitation then use Dodge and Throw the moment Rough Divide is about to hit you, You can hit Squall during his recovery animation

It also may help if you lure Squall in the air, He's easier to fight then because he has more limited choices. DO NOT use D&T offensively

So I finally fought my friend, the tactic actually worked! Thanks to Snooze and Lose mainly, if you wanna see how it went check out my vids it should be like r-r-ound 1-3, thanks for all the help!
