So, this is one of the greatest anime of all time and probably the best comedy anime ever... Well, I'm still at episode 6 and I already fell off my chair and started rofl-ing multiple times.
Nobody would think it's a comedy anime from watching the opening. In fact, SZS is a bit... different from a comedy. It is very humorous, but it's also... I don't know how to explain it. Just watch it D:
It's about Itoshiki Nozomu a.k.a. Zetsubou(Despair)-sensei, the most pessimistic teacher of all time, who always jumps to the worst possible conclusion. While trying to hang himself ("make himself taller"), she gets "saved" by a girl who is the exact opposite of him. Afterwards, he finds out that she is in the class he teaches in, and said class is also filled with some very unique students...
It doesn't sound funny, but it IS.
What is also interesting about SZS is that it's filled with references. HOWEVER - the references aren't obviously stated, like in Lucky Star. Most if not all references are just the hidden, completely unrelated text sometimes appearing on signs, blackboards etc. - most of the time they appear for 1~10 seconds and appear randomly w/o any explanations. Some reference spoilers:
For example, in episode 3 you see Light Yagami's face for half of second, and then "Death Neet" written on the blackboard. Followed by "Use your (moe) drill to pierce the heavens!" on the blackboard, "Equivalent exchange" and "Believe in me who believes in you" on different signs in the same scene. It even references FF, and not just once!
A definite must-see for every anime fan. IIRC it has 3 seasons of about 25 episodes and several OVA series (with one that is still ongoing!).
Seriously. Watch it.
