I just thought I'd share my gem of knowledge here for everyone who's interested in character growth and the like. These are taken from the Official Final Fantasy XIII Strategy Guide, published by Piggyback Interactive.

Character Class Development/Efficiency:
All classes can reach a Role Lv. 5, with stat boosts particular to that class* (while that class is active on the battlefield) upon ascending to a higher role. However, not all characters learn the same abilities and have the same stat growth per role.

These stat boosts are applied to the actions carried out by the character in the Commando, Ravager, Medic, Synergist, and Saboteur roles and actions carried out on the character by the enemy in the Sentinel role (to clarify any confusion there may be surrounding the bonuses awarded to the Medic and Synergist roles).
