This weeks movie night may be put on hold because of an important issue that has been brought up and that is related to legal issues. (I'm in a rush so sorry if I'm a bit vague) Now, we don't want anybody getting pinned for anything therefore I'd like to bring up that we don't want to do this and push legal boundries.
So for one, we need to know, can we do this safely and without getting into trouble?
Reb has stated that it should be fine if the person streaming owns the movie itself and if that's the case we'll have to withdraw some of the movie ideas put forward.
We should also be fine if we're not profiting from this, which we aren't. But please, discuss the issues of this before going ahead.
Again, sorry to be vague but I've really gotta run.. I think you guys get the jist of this though. ><; Sorry if you don't. D:

Actually, I am not too sure about that now, since I don't know if people own legal rights to redistribute the movies... but to be honest, I'm not really sure. D:

What if a person has an Original DVD then upload it in a Media Streaming Site, then from there, we stream.:) Does it also subjected to legallity issues?

That's probably more illegal, since now you're exposing it to the general public.

Not really it's okay if the movie was a 2 or 1 years old not like that they will care about losing money anymore....

Hmm IDK about I thought copyrights held for 50 years.
If the person could upload the movie to private place would that makes more okay, is that even possible?

Talked with Azazer. This is his consensus.
As long as the movie in question is physically owned by the streamer in question. The digital copy can be marked as a back up file and used to stream legally. At least he thinks so.

imo, if the person streaming owns it = its legal, as long as no one else can permanently save it on their own computer.... but how to avoid that xD?.....

That would be another issue... :)
What I know is that, in sites like youtube, the newest music videos for example are uploaded by the producers themselves so I guess it is safe in a situation like this but I really don't know about owning an original copy and streaming it. :)
i have been trying to find out if other people/forums have done this before but sadly i couldn't BUT i have found out that streaming a movie is like a streaming movie sites some of them are legal and some of them are not
of cores the legal sites have owned the original copy(and they make you pay to watch..)
but there are some other problems like maybe what if the movie is ban from some of the viewers country
but if you asked me i think it's legal cuz of the FFXIII streams after the game got release there have been a lot of streams but SE haven't done any thing about it cuz they the streamer owned the original copy of the game i know this deferent but still..
oh and we should do what Zane said and get a private room or something we don't want any starnger to come in and steal the moive

This. Definitely.
I'm pretty sure that as long as you own the movie it is fine. Also, ripping a dvd and uploading it to another site won't do, that's worse :P
I've just done a bit of research and here's the verdict I'm getting. It's illegal unless the movies are pretty old. However they can become legal in some cases.
1. Different laws are given out in different countries and this applies to copyright/streaming as well. So see if you guys can check out the laws in your area.
2. It can be made legal if you stream off certain websites/hosts. I don't know about this one.. I haven't looked much into it, nor does it really make sense to me but from what I've seen there are sites out there that stream legal movies.
3. Worse case scenario. We can't stream because of copyright.. D:

i agree with zanes idea and thats honestly what i was thinking but i didnt know if it was possible
if we can all agree to a private room where no one will interfere then perhaps its possible
(for the sake of safety i wish that we only stream movies that we own, yes it reduces our movie availbility but its safer that way just in case)

07-31-2010, 01:18 AM
I agree with that also, so does Lion King sound good gaiz? :B
Haha, but seriously, it does sound safer if we stream what we own and have a private room to do so. Also, try not to go for the recent movies that have just been released (DVD speaking.. :P) this should add to the safety net :P

SteZiL. Where was LotR shot?
I thought so.
Where was The Last Samurai shot?
Exactly.
What is the most surreal place on Earth?
New Zealand....
Of course, New York City still kicks both Australia and New Zealand to the curb. Hell if it was NYC vs the rest of the world NYC would still come damn close to winning.

That's how it works : P

Anyway, I've taken a look at the copyright laws and I think we're alright if people actually OWN the movies they show. Since my Dad's a movie nut we have all of what I listed over at the movie thread.
I'll go look for some private streaming programs/websites to use, and I'll get back to you guys asap.

Essentially you'd want to restrict the movies being streamed to Public Domain movies.

I am disappointed by the list of "movies" we have here.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Pink Panther (original series >:3)
-These are the only non anime non pirated movie/series I own that I have in my shelf right now
Azazer
07-31-2010, 08:13 AM
But are they public domain? If the movie in question doesn't belong to that category, there is the risk of becoming legally liable for any actions taken against you (or any other participating individuals).

Well here's a list of films which are in public domain (US).
