shanty has been able to punish HG with something since DFF unless the sephiroth ended HG right as bind ended.
if sephiroth continues to go down and lands on the ground, she can:
- use one of her HPs (less reliable)
- time another bind when he reaches the ground... and when he's grounded, he can't HG
if he whiffs it in the air, shanty can either punish him herself or assist punish him. i remember testing this with hala way back in the day before he had his shanty v sephy match with aveot.

And now bind is blockable IIRC so it might be hard to time it correctly for it not to be canceled by HG aoe. But yeah HG is still assist punishable, though many players tend to concentrate on avoiding it rather than punishing it, that is, if you're not spaming it like an idiot ofc.
But yeah Hell's Gate does have a mandatory place in Sephiroth's moveset, if you want to get rid of an HP move, choose Octaslash.
"Dear devs, please nerf rock. He is too powerful. Paper is ok though.Beware, I am in no way responsible of the shock this image may cause on you ...
Hell Gate combine with heaven Light is what give Sephiroth a good vertical air game using Omni Air Dash+. These two attacks complete what Omni Air Dash lack: Vertical tracking. This is why is recommend to use it in all match ups when you using Omni Air Dash.
Hells gate gives you a invulnerability when falling and the shockwave(when you finish the move in the air) has good range i prefer it over Heavens Light
I starting using Sephi recently, and I really like HG. I usually manage to get someone on the ground and I land fast on the ex cores. Plus the satisfaction of getting someone from the air. Me and my friend were doing ad-hoc, he uses Kain. He missed the sky rave and I did HG... he got a one-way trip to the floor.
You can also use it to help people to reach the Ex core, in places like Planet's core, it's just easy to get the ex core there, and related places, so if your opponent wants the ex core, just help him =)
