    Default Decisions, Decisions.

I've been playing DDFF for a long time, but not once have I ever thought about maining Laguna. I love using Laguna since he's a fun yet tactical character, but I seem to be having a bit of trouble deciding how to set him up ability-wise. I ask you all, what abilities are absolute musts, and which are sort of "meh"?

Honestly playing Laguna you'll find theres no set moveset, it's going to change to keep up with each match-up. If you wanted a general moveset that can fit most (Not all) matchups, you'll probably want something like Ricochet Shot/E.Shield/Machine Gun or Grenade Bomb for ground and Pummel/Shotgun/Sticky Bomb or Homing Bazooka for aerial. Of course this is completely subjective, and like most technical characters, Laguna needs more effort than a fixed moveset as well as some personal taste.

Just keep experimenting to find a moveset that works for each match-up. Laguna requires a lot of effort, and the pay off compared to most characters isnt that great, but Laguna is a very rewarding character if you have the patience for him.

Thanks for the pointers. In my experience playing the game I haven't used the more technical characters of the game. I've been trying lately, because what's the point of playing a game where I don't use half the characters, but most of the strategies I employ end up backfiring badly, Laguna's especially. The most technical character I use as a main is Sephiroth. =P

But thank you very much for the tips. I'll start right away with playing Laguna more often.

That's kind of a general statement, but I'll try my best to give some advice. Laguna obviously is a zoner, but he excells at being close to his enemy (Don't mistake that for melee range) due to his ground moveset. You want Laguna to be on the ground at all times, unless the matchup forces you Aerial. Delaying Ricochet Shot is one of Laguna's better tools for punishing, as if the enemy dodges early he can bounce and hit with it, which will also trigger Sneak Attack.

Always take advantage of E.Shield, it's one of Laguna's best tools in more than just the obvious ways. It can be used as a chokehold point in smaller arenas, giving Laguna time to space properly. It also serves as a fantastic assist trap and will shutdown a few characters pretty well (Terra, Onion Knight etc). And of course he can stand in it, but that's pretty dangerous depending on matchup.

If forced Aerial be sure you know your matchup, Pummel is mostly fixed as it covers your dodges for assists and serves as a great keepaway. The other 2 slots should be changed depending on matchup. For example, if fighting Yuna you'll probably want Aerial E.Shield in one of those slots, because it prevents her aerial zoning.

As for builds, Laguna does well with just a general damage build. He already builds assist well with Pummel, and his EX is nothing special, but it does offer new tactics. In short neglecting either side isnt worth it due to how Laguna functions. SbS isnt good due to Laguna's HP game, and pure EX goes back to the issue of HP attacks without assists.

Laguna is one of the harder characters of the game, not because of Squares silly title of "Tactical Gunner", he's one of the harder characters because of how each match-up is a different story for him. Instead of sticking to one tactic, he needs a new one for each character in the cast, and making mistakes with Laguna is very costly. Just stick at him, and learn every match-up and try every tool. If it sounds like too much effort, it's because Laguna is effort. You need to be pretty devoted to him like a lot of the technical characters.

That pretty much sums it up but yea make sure you always have E-shield on the ground.

Also what assist is best for him. I noticed Kuja doesnt work as well for him as the others.
I dont main him but I do like to use him and the only assist thats good with him is jecht depending on the situation.

Laguna vs Ultimecia is pretty one sided in Ulty's favor. Just apply the same strat you use with any character against her, camp below her and look out for mistakes and punish them. Equip Aerial E.Shield for her and use Split Laser as your main punishing tool, Ragnarok Blade if she gets dodge happy.

As for assists Laguna doesnt have that many good assist links, but my favorites are: Jecht, chains well after Shotgun and is a great punisher. Also has long animations so you can posistion yourself. Aeris, links after Pummel and Ricochet if you chase before she casts it. WoL, one of the only few characters that can chain off of a Ricochet Shot and does pretty impressive damage.
