Yeah, this thread won't turn into a reckoning between members and mods, be it this forum's or #DDFFCasual's.
It's an e-trend to go against a site's/forum's/chat's staff as if we always took some malicious joy in using our powers over people... but we're staff for a reason: we have all been here for a very long time, we all lurk, we know everyone and, on top of that pile, we can discern (potential) trouble-makers/trolls. So yeah, Kura strangling chatters with his tentacles (re: chat-locking) or Narolf-Kim Jong-il is fun and all, but refrain from taking those (bad) caricatures too far every time a modship-act you don't agree with occurs.

I don't think Seraph Sephiroth should be explaining the Backroom because he was not part of its inception, so he has no idea why exactly it was created. It's not about preventing the "good players from insulting the bad ones." That's retarded. You're expected to have enough civility to not do that anywhere on the forum.
I do, however, believe that we should have made the Backroom visible to all, so they could see the discussions taking place, even if they couldn't respond. The US Congress can be viewed on TV 24 hours a day on C-SPAN (as boring as fuck as it is to watch).
Maybe we need like...D-SPAN...

He was invited from the get-go, so he got the first memo and saw the first post of it. He's well aware of why it was created.
As true as this is, just because something is expected doesn't mean it'll actually happen.
This, I agree with. It would also possibly help to spark more discussion in the other regular Character Boards.

Nah, they should just keep the backroom discussions private and archive them, what would be the point in seeing a live discussion you couldn't respond too. Also it won't really spark discussion in the normal forum at all.

Then you have people discussing subjects which haven't been covered in and out: that will lead to even more shitstorms of fails and misunderstandings. It would've been an issue if there weren't digests, again.
Nexus, I think you're frustrated for not having access to the backroom, quite frankly. I mean, been around ever since 2009 and still not in the backroom? Well, that was because at the time I suggested the members' list (~ end of August) you were inactive here if I recall correctly. At any rate, I can tell you, again, you aren't missing much out. I don't believe the backroom has been a failure overall (in spite of me regretting it arrived so late rather than within the month following the release): it has hosted 1100+ posts, although it's pretty clear it won't be as lively from now on as it used to be a few months ago.

And this is a very, very good attitude to have regarding the backroom. Don't be bothered by its existence, make it a goal to get in! If you get accepted, then you have proven your skill and willingness to contribute to the forum. People shouldn't feel privileged to be allowed in the backroom, they should earn it! It's just unfortunate that this attitude is so rare...
I don't frighten you because I'm mean, do I? I hope not...I'm usually online seeking practice or helping other players, but it's hard to find other people that challenge me or want to learn. However, if you do want to learn, I would enjoy playing with you and do my best to help you out where I can. You might also benefit from visiting #DDFFCasual on occasion, as the primary goal, as stated earlier, is to help bring players that love the game together. Helping new players learn is just one of the ways to accomplish this.

I know Mike's aim is to keep the "lesser known" members and viewers at the forefront of this thread, so I'll keep my thoughts brief.
I have no problems with newer players starting conversation about something. However, something I want the newer players to be aware of is that you cannot state your opinion as though it were fact. That kind of thing is sure to get you floundering in the deep end when some of our older and more experienced players come out of the brush and see your "opinion". Many of our experienced members aren't exactly the most endearing folk when it comes to discussion or helping new players. However, as Garuga said, I think that someone who has valuable experience can be a valuable asset to new players as a teacher or mentor. I try to do that when I have time, and was one of the reasons I supported #DDFFCasual. When someone new vehemently defends their opinion as fact because they practiced it against AI, they're going to get shot down and HARD. There is an unwritten rule among the older players: "Do your research before you speak." That doesn't necessarily mean you have to be right any time you discuss something. Having PVP experience (while it's not accessible to everyone) and having AI experience are completely different beasts. I just want everyone to keep that in mind, old and new members alike.
When it comes to the experience and mentor factor, I'm terrible at writing guides. I can probably write about 10 unorganized paragraphs about all of my 4 characters that I've come to learn to varying degrees over the last 10 months, but I can't organize it in a pretty guide. Don't ask me how, I just can't. I'm more than willing to help someone willing to ask questions and learn, however. If more people were open with their information and willing to answer questions to newer players, I think the new crowd would be less skittish about approaching someone for help. IRC isn't an option for everyone, but VMs and PMs are. I encourage new players to find people that represent the character they're interested in and ask some questions. Get as many opinions about the character as you can. The more information you have to go on, the better. If you want to learn the character yourself first, like Hella-Bright does, you're welcome to do so.
I said I'd keep this brief, so I'll pop back in later to add the rest of my opinions. I'm glad to see newer players sticking their heads in and making their voices heard.
Though apart, forever connected.

Actually some of the comments you leave and the constructive criticism is the reason why i want to try PVP because you don't beat around the bush. You tell it like it is... now whether or not people want to hear the truth is another story. Next time I happen to see you or any of the tenureds ill give it a shot.
