A life of wandering and solitude, fighting only for your own glory and a fat paycheck. Thus is the life of a mercenary.
Mercenary System:
Mercenaries are free agents who offer their talents to the Team Wars... For a price. They will not count towards a Team's total participants, but the following restrictions are on Mercenaries so that there are perks to being on a team:
- Mercenaries can only be signed to 1 team at a time and can only participate in that team's challenges until their current contract ends.
- Mercenaries cannot issue challenges to teams. This must be done by the team that hired them.
- Mercenaries cannot participate in any official Team Wars tournaments.
- If Mercenaries choose to join a team or leave a team to become a Mercenary, they must wait a week before being activated. In addition, if a Mercenary joins a team, he forfeits all the points that he earned as a result of joining a team. All Mercenaries start at 0 points.
- Mercenaries may not play in a 1v1 challenge between teams.
- Mercenaries can only participate in team rounds (In other words, they may not play tiebreakers).
Hiring a Mercenary
* Updated *
To hire a Mercenary for your team, you must offer a mercenary a specific contract or accept a Mercenary's hiring terms. However, Mercenaries may charge what they wish. Team Leaders looking to hire Mercenaries will determine whether or not that value is acceptable.
This comes from your team's total points. In addition, the Mercenary can be paid for his contributions during a battle depending on their contract. Contracts can span multiple challenges, but cannot exceed 3 challenges total.
Here is an example contract:
"Team A hires Mercenary A to a contract worth 1 point to start. He will participate in two challenges for us before being released from the contract. In addition, he will be paid 1 point for every individual victory he achieves while playing in our challenges."
Mercenaries have options of hearing out several teams with their offers before choosing to sign with a team. However, teams must bid for a Mercenary without knowing the price offered by another team. To do this, Mercenaries must only entertain offers via Private Messages or via queries on the IRC channel.
No other teams can try to hire the same Mercenary after he has signed a contract with another team.
If a Mercenary has been hired by a team, the team must wait 1 week before hiring the same Mercenary again. This is in the interest of allowing other teams a chance to contract a Mercenary and to prevent a Team from monopolizing someone's services or relying on the same Mercenary to earn points.
Teams can only hire one Mercenary to a contract at a time.
Mercenary contracts are announced publicly. If you plan on hiring a mercenary for an upcoming challenge, you must announce the contract at that time.
Paying a Mercenary
Mercenaries get paid at the end of a contract. Mercenaries earn their pay based on the initial signing bonus offered and the points they are offered from playing in challenges. Mercenaries only earn their additional paychecks by completing their additional contract information.
Mercenary A signs with Team A. Team A has 100 points at the start of the week. The contract with Mercenary A is a 5 point signing bonus and 20% of their points per challenge. Team A participates in two challenges: a 2v2 (20 points) and 3v3 (30 points) and Mercenary A plays in both challenges.
Team A wins both challenges, and earns 50 points for the team. Mercenary A wins both of his matches in the 2v2 challenge. He also wins 1 match and loses 1 match in the 3v3. As the contract says, he can only earn a maximum of 20% of points each match and he can only play two matches per challenge according to the rules. To figure out his salary, take 20% of the possible points from each challenge and determine how many points he would earn per win. Therefore, for the 2v2, he earns 2 points per win. For the 3v3, he earns 3 points per win.
With the 2v2 challenge, Mercenary A earned 4 points total for his two wins. With the 3v3 challenge, Mercenary A earned 3 points for his one win and one loss. At the end of the challenges, Team A has earned 50 points and owes Mercenary A 12 points:
100 points (previous value) + 50 points (earned value) - 12 (due to the Mercenary) = 138 points total for Team A at the end of the challenges.
Keep in mind, certain contracts may require that you pay a Mercenary regardless of whether they win or lose, so a Mercenary cannot participate in a challenge if you do not have the points to pay him for his services. Do not forget this. If a Mercenary cannot be paid, they have an option of terminating their contract because you lack the funds to pay them.
Mercenary Exclusive Actions
Mercenaries have the option of choosing to challenge other freelance Mercenaries who have not signed a contract for the time being. These challenges are done similar to the Team challenges, but no points are earned outside of Mercenaries betting with each other. Without a bet on them, challenges by Mercenaries only add to their personal records.
In addition, Mercenary specific events may be added in the future if the interest level is high enough.
Mercenary Defeats
* NEW *
When a Mercenary takes part in a challenge and is defeated, they must sit out and tend their wounds (as they do not benefit from the Team's health care system.) Under this system, any individual defeat in a challenge will force a Mercenary to sit out for a 24 hour period (which stacks but cannot exceed a 48 hour period) after their contract expires..
For example, Mercenary A takes part in a 3v3 challenge and is defeated in both of his matches. He is forced to sit out for at least a 48 hour period due to his wounds. If the Mercenary is bound by a contract to remain with a team for additional challenges, he may participate in challenges until his contract expires, at which point the restriction kicks in.
Mercenary Sign Ups
Parties interested in becoming a mercenary must sign up in this thread. This will provide a list of potential partners for team leaders to consider making an offer to. Please provide your PSN name and your time zone. If you have access to the IRC and would prefer to entertain your offers on there via query, let your potential employers know when you are best available for contact.
If, for whatever reason, you join a team, your points (as stated before) are reset to 0 if you ever return to the life of a mercenary as your price for abandoning your path of solitude.
Remember, mercenaries who join teams (or team members who leave to become mercenaries) must wait a full week after their signup to become active and participate in Team Wars or sign contracts with prospective teams.
