Of course they don't see a problem with it, they enjoy their 1v1s.
As for forcing change, I would agree with you if it was just me, but a lot of people want this change to go through. It's like having one friend telling you to stop smoking as opposed to ten friends telling you to stop smoking. Really weird analogy, I know, but hopefully it gets my point across; public opinion matters.
There's always two sides to a coin, yes. Obviously, we can't just outright remove them (not that it was ever my intention to try and make that happen) but leaving them be as it stands causes an imbalance. As it's been stated several times, you can get more points for your team via 1v1 than a group war. That in it iself...terribly wrong. An environment based around teamwork should not reward more for 1v1 than group play.
But, that's all going to be changed, anyway. The scoring system is getting a revamp next season anyway, so...I'd like to think that it should solve a majority of problems.
Instead of outright refusing, the person receiving the challenge could just request a 2v2. If the challenger declines the request for any reason and then the person receiving the challenge then denies the challenge because the request couldn't be fulfilled, then I see no reason to punish the person receiving the challenge for declining it.
So, guys, if you don't want a 1v1, just request for a 2v2. That will actually force people to do some planning for dates and times, something that (as I've stated multiple times already) really isn't that difficult.

And by playing 1v1s, you are representing the team. But I agree, more teamwork would be good - but limiting 1v1's availability isn't the way to do it, in my eyes. Just make the prospect of 2v2s more attractive, so 1v1s can be played if need be.
That's why I said you should make 1v1s less rewarding, but not less available; so 1v1s earn less, but can still be played if necessary, which is often the case as Garuga pointed out earlier.
Yeah, it's cancelling challenges that gets you punished - I was thinking of the 'you have to play at least one challenge' thing. In that case, why not just simply reject all 1v1 challenges if you dislike them so much? Encourage other teams to go 2v2 against you.
I believe it's more a case of those who prefer 1v1s are less vocal... but I see your reasoning. Well, I was just putting my thoughts forward. Take them as you will.

That's basically what i've said, A points limit to them, everyone still had gone on about "lets cut them down to 2!"

Just restating this mainly for the bold parts since it seems that what I had to say regarding it fell on deaf ears.
Right now, 1v1s are unlimited, quick, painless (relatively), and good for points. It makes sense that naturally teams who have players willing to do them will take advantage of this (even if it's not their intent). But I stand firm on the fact that falling into a rhythm with them will not only impact your team in the next season, but will also impact you in the end of season tournaments which are 3v3 at their base.
Though apart, forever connected.

Spoiler:
I'm liking the idea of limited the points that the 1v1 gives, I think something like that is neededand is a good idea
