When I say that I mean, Versus XIII doesn't really have much degree of turn-based combat in it whereas all the numbered titles do. Versus plays more like Kingdom Hearts than Final Fantasy, not that I'm complaining.
But on the note of experimenting, I'd like Square to do some of that for XV, I wouldn't mind if we go back to IX gameplay but it would be nice to see something new. People will rage either way; "Square is too scared to try new shit! I've seen this before, he's just like Cloud!" or "This is bullcrap, this isn't Final Fantasy!"
Whatever, it's Square and we all know it'll be good.

Hell, I've even read some elder gamers claiming it began after FFVI.
I also think the quality has (drastically) decreased over the years (though that isn't specific to Square but to the J-RPGs genre in general, which now mostly gets released on handhelds), but I would certainly be content with the current releases if it still were fresh and new in my mind. Besides, the overall consensus that FF is going downhill didn't prevent XIII-2 to do pretty well sales-wise.

Hah, that's pretty much what it is, nostalgia. And the funny and the most ironic thing I keep hearing about XIII is about it being too linear, because you know the previous ones weren't. I mean oh yeah they let you on the wander on the world map from the start but that pretty much gives the illusion of free roaming until you get an airship or boat. Fuck man 7 was pretty linear until you got the Tiny Bronco or 10 until the very end. And the only FFs I can think off that weren't as linear as the other is 2 and 12.
But I do agree that RPGs are getting kind of bland story wise, but that doesn't mean you can still make it fun by other means.
There's a limit to how much you can put on nostalgia. I started playing the games around VII/VIII and I thought XIII,XII and X, as well as VIII wereshitacularreally quite poor. There's a reason beyond its fans that FF doesn't have a great reputation anymore.
Like for example, some of the later ones really sucked.

Ah c'mon they're not that bad. They at least have one thing about them that more than makes up for whatever you might hate.

I've found many problems with recent final fantasy games.
That being said, I enjoyed them. Regardless of whether they were the perfect game or not, I enjoyed them.
The series is on a rapid decline, I no longer enjoy them as much as I enjoyed 9, or 10. 12 was fun but had nothing in it for me after the halfway point, 13 was fun but I could never replay it, 13-2 I havn't even beat, I like it a lot, just havn't beaten it. 15 will likely be fun enough for me to play, but will I finish it? Maybe, Maybe not.
To be totally honest, we all hype the games like no freakin tomorrow, then start complaining when we don't like them. Being a Final Fantasy fan doesn't mean we need to be blind to the problems untill we experience them ourselves, you know? If you don't like them, don't hype them. Just because we don't like them doesn't mean we have to attempt to ruin other peoples days for liking and hyping them though. It's relative to our age, our wants, and our preference.

On the contrary, the things I hate outweigh the few things that could have offered a redemption if they were better. Sure, 13 had good chars with motivations and pains and so forth, but that couldn't make me finish the game because the gameplay was just way too linear, until it wasn't, and at that point it was way too grindy. Why would I like a game where I spend 25 minutes beating the living fuck out of a behemoth king only to have it turn around and oneshot my leader? Answer: I do not.
There was a lot bad about the game, but that pushed it over the edge for me. Stopped playing after the 3rd time that happened to me, and I haven't looked back.
