The Nerve Gear they use to play the game has a battery that lasts for roughly 2 hours. As long as they didn't try to remove helmets and the battery lived long enough the players' bodies were safe from harm. The light novel explains it by saying that the equipment just keeps trying to connect to the servers and repeatedly tries until it succeeds.
