The title is a bit misleading...the method works because Feral Chaos does not have a method of recovery at all, not that he lacks Auto-Recovery.

Yes, the AI could've used Controlled Recovery or Auto-Recovery. It's not specific to either. It just didn't use it because it's stupid like that sometimes.
