Well, I don't play it anymore but there is Runescape.

It's got a lot of content, and unlike many other MMORPGs, there's no class system or Race so you can do everything in the game. There is a free version, but honestly once you hit level 60 or so (maybe more, much has changed since I left) you'll want to be a Member. It's relatively cheap (somewhere around 5 US, not sure if 6 or so). From my experience, it was loads of fun. Lots of quests, skills to level up and mini-games to keep your time occupied.

I left cause I lost internet for a while (like a whole summer) and then just didn't pick it back up. My friends also quit at the time and I lost my Membership so there wasn't much to do anymore. Though one started again but I'm too lazy.
