Wait wait wait...my drops are specified by what I have equipped? I already know higher luck increases drop-rate, but what identifies the pieces that are going to be dropped?

P.S. I've only seen drops in Duel Colliseum, I haven't unlocked everything yet.

This is for Online/Ad-Hoc battles where, after purchases in the PP Catalog, both players can obtain the other's gear. The gear that you would potentially give to your opponent would be that which you would have equipped at the time. This somewhat applies in offline battles in that your opponents can sometimes drop the gear they're currently wearing. Just note that you only "drop" gear when fighting someone else online.
