I'm not exactly sure to what you are saying. But I'll try to clear this up for you.
If you are starting battling your friend who has regular equipment on, you have a chance of getting an artifact from him. Depending on what equipment he has on, the new artifact will have different amount of trades on it. If you name the new artifact, equip it, and your friends gets a drop of your named artifact the trade goes up by one. If he renames it and equips it and you receive it through drop again, it goes up by another trade.
This way, you'll be able to increase it to 50 trades, by exchanging back and forth. Once it has 45 or more trades, you'll be getting high tier abilities, which are ex conqueror, ex seeker and many others.

things. It isn't the mountain ahead that wears you out - it's the grain of sand in your shoe.

Wait i'm confused how do you farm rosetta stones this way? lol
Because when you fight an opponent you have a chance to battlegen their accessories or components that make that accessory. All the Lore items and Rosetta Stone are made of the same components (Water Wind and Life Stones.) These items all give you more Luck which increases the % for the components to drop.
Spoiler:
I don't have a friend card which drops rosetta stones though >_>

Once a Squall mainer; Always a Squall mainer.
We do not start any fight; We end them.
This parameter called "trades" - is it a hidden number, one that I cannot see in the Artifacts screen?
Question 2, re the set penalties, are they specific to the type of abilities granted by the equipment? For example, do all equipment pieces with the Ex Seeker ability come with the same penalty set? That way, you could at most equip two Ex Seeker pieces and enjoy max EX Force Absorption +40% and EX Absorb +4m from your equipment (and not +80% and +8m). If anyone could confirm this that'd be much appreciated, thanks.
Also, sharing a bit of my experience:
1. I find that using Flood is faster than other HP attacks.
2. Fight on Chaos's stage to avoid having to run or dash into range.
3. I equip the accessory Mog Amulet (drop rate x 1.5) in place of one of the Lore's. Of course, once you've broken all your Mog Amulets, replace with another Lore. Hopefully you'll get more Mog Amulets dropped by your friend, assuming that he will equip them too.
4. If you aren't equipping any headpiece that needs to be dropped to your friend, consider equiping the Thief's Cap (drop rate x 1.2).

Or find them in chests or as DP bonus treasures in Story Mode.

Change yourself, and the world changes with you.
You can't find out the 'hidden trade value' like from Thornlets except using a guide. You can tell how many manual trades happens however.
Everything always comes with the same penalty. So ALL Ex Seekers come with Ex Dearth. Infact ALL Ex Mongers ALSO come with Ex Dearth, meaning you CANNOT equip 2 Ex Seeker AND 2 Ex Mongers to gain 60% Ex-Force Absorption. So all Master of the Bravery will come with Heartsap, all Ex Conqueror comes with Ex Bane and etc.
so....if you fight someone who already has ex seeker artifacts, you can get those same artifacts by fighting him?
