I stated this in the other thread that's about signatures and how big they are but I think that this matter in particular needs to be addressed on its own.
I'm sorry if I offend anyone or it feels like I'm pointing fingers but I think this has to be discussed, lately I've been seeing a lot of gif images in signatures which is fine -- to a point. I'm now beginning to wonder if we should have a limit on either..
1. The amount of GIFs we can use in our signatures.
2. The size of the GIF including dimensions and file size.
It's beginning to become a slight annoyance, having to go through all the posts with gif images being repeated over and over. It shouldn't have to be said because I think that most members already know this but we should take into account other members connections, especially slower moving ones. We don't want whole pages taking forever to load because of signatures.
Also, please don't say "You have the option of turning off signatures" because like I said before I like to see them. I just think we've seen enough of the Falcon Paunch joke, haven't we? Dx
This day will never come again, so let me have this moment.
I think 2 signatures are the worst offenders on these forums.
Well, the "we've seen it enough" is kinda void imo given how we can state the very same thing for static images that we're sick of seeing. Whether it's repeated is regardless, we're allowed to place whatever sodding images in our sig so long as it doesn't negate the signature rules.
So on that note, I do agree that we should set a new rule which no one will follow anyway for animated gifs, given how they can bleed your connection dry (for those concerned). What really needs to be restricted is the filesize itself, the dimensions can have the same rule as the static images (500 x 200?) but the filesize shouldn't go past a certain number. I'm thinking if someone has two gifs, then their filesize combined shouldn't go past that restrictive number.
That said, I say 500kb. Because that's what all the cool kids are saying.
500kb by 4 members suddenly becomes 2mb, and when people, namely Australian's, have very shitty internet caps, it can quickly add up.
Sure, more of the gifs on here are from the same sourcefile, and as long as it stays cached, it will only need to load once, but what about all the others? I think if you can't get it in 100kb, you shouldn't have it at all.
100kb is kinda pushing it given how even static images can easily go past that mark.
Your av and sig don't have a problem with it, so why should anyone else's?
