But see, from NeoBahamut's point, no one in X had a listed last name. It wasn't important enough for that game. In reality, it really wasn't important to give most characters a last name in the Final Fantasies :P
It's overthinking in that you're searching for an answer to Tidu's last name, when no one else from his game has one either. It'd be like searching for a pet to buy in a grocery store. There are no pets, why would you search for one there?
There are no last names in Final Fantasy X, why search for one?

Don't mistake overthinking for just casual discussion. I understand no one in X has a last name. So the question's pretty much changed to, why doesn't anyone have a last name in X?
Sorry if the question isn't significant enough for some of you to think twice. But I asked the question and left it open for discussion. I was satisfied with the answer that no one in the world of X has a last name, which actually MAKES SENSE and doesn't require any more explaining. Why is that overthinking?
If SQUARE made a game where every character was bald, would it be too much to ask why? Sheesh.
It's not unusual. Firion and Luneth have no last names, either.
Dissidia: Lightning, Squall
P4A: Yu, Yosuke
BB: Ragna, Jin, Noel
Spoiler:
It's overthinking because you're looking for a reason that probably isn't there. Most likely, Square just felt that it wasn't necessary to the story. I mean, if you want to theorize, go ahead. If it gets interesting enough, I may even join in. But if you're actually looking for an explanation, it's probably as simple as "we just plain didn't give him one."
Edit: Damn it, why don't I ever see all of these posts?! >.< Anyway, you just kind of misinterpreted what I said to be an in-context explanation. It might just be that no one in X ever says their last name.

Okay, I get that. But if I'm not mistaken, MOST Final Fantasy games in which characters actually DO have last names STILL never mention them.
Which was part of my original question. I'm not really looking for an end-all answer, cuz I know unless we have Hironobu Sakaguchi here on the forums, we won't get one. But wouldn't you think that they CONSCIOUSLY named these characters without last names? Reason or not, there's no way they could've just "forgot to" when all the characters since FFIV had last names.
The way I see it, this is literally impossible. Considering the previous 6 games had casts with last names, sometime during the naming process, the subject had to come up. The reason is probably simple, but Ying is correct that there's no way they just "forgot." Why, I find those Cash 4 Gold commercials more probable than that scenario.
Most likely, in FFX, last "names" are used to distinguish this. Guado, Ronso and presumably Hypello (the only named Hypello I recall is Barkeep, and that's only a nickname because no one knows his real name) have their respective "race" names tacked onto the end of their first names, i.e Seymour Guado and Kelk Ronso. Exception is, of course, the Al Bhed (and "regular" humans), possibly due to the fact that the Al Bhed are the most similar to the humans (the only real difference being the swirly green eyes and blond hair which isn't seen in Spiran humans). Humans, of course, being the most populous race, are exempt from this rule (Personally, I think Wakka Human is a lousy name.)
This is possibly due to the presence of Sin. Recall, it wiped out the entire Kilika in, like, 5 minutes. With something so powerful oppressing them, humans would have started to care less about who their parents are, compared to whether they will live to become parents. Don't forget, in FFX, it's not an uncommon story for people to have lost their parents at a young age.
I don't think I put that point across well, hopefully you guys can understand what I'm trying to say...?
