I'd challenge a Zidane with 3 Fires out, definitely not a Kuja though

Ummm, what?
You can't play mindgames in a turn based RPG, so I don't know what you're talking about. Cloud isn't a tank either, he hits hard with his sword, but he could use any materia, meaning his magic attacks can be effective as well.
No one's saying that Fire is the best anti-Mage attack, but it's literally the ONLY pressure that Cloud can put on them.

I didn't mean to offend you, but I did check out your thread, I even complimented it if you noticed. I'm just saying that for a discussion like Cloud's Air Game, it makes more sense to make it into its own thread for easy accessibility, rather than looking through one big thread that tries to do everything.
Besides, there's a grand total of 5 pages for Cloud, I've seen the same threads floating around on the first page since I joined the site, it's not like there's a big bumping issue, so keeping things less cluttered isn't exactly all that important in my mind.
A lot of people have found a big use for fire so now its a popular choice for a move.
Not sure about JP Cloud, Nero could answer that or Eva.
Spoiler:
meh, i guess cloud's air game is very situational at best, but at least you can use braver to punish people who block on immediate reaction. fire is pretty good since its slow homing and both aerial and ground compared to blade beam being fast but weak
LIKE A BOSS
i havent used firaga in a long time since fires easy to keep up with and land other moves but i've seen it used effectively in some of evas vids XD well on the japanese version at least. i used 2 use firaga alot and it worked just fine XD firas so damn fast that people guard quickly although i wonder if i cant use fira like squall uses his blizzard barret when the opponents in the air and using the landing lag from fira to land climhazzard :P actually i think firas 2 fast i dont remember

That's nice.
We're not playing a RPG game here. We're playing a fighter - whether or not it's a true blue fighter is subjective, but it's a game where you fight in real-time and it's not turn-based. Not a game where you choose 'Fight' and it makes you go up and hit the enemy once.
No character in this game is a 'tank'. That makes no sense. Do you know what a tank is? A tank is not something that has to be up close to attack. That is classified as a 'melee' character. A tank is something that can soak up damage for it's party and not die to the damage.
Can Cloud soak up damage noticeably more than any other character?
And since this proves that Cloud is not a 'tank' like you say he was in Final Fantasy VII (which he wasn't, there's no character in any Final Fantasy that was is close enough to tank-level of damage soaking although there were some that could take more damage than others), then your silly idea that because Cloud doesn't mainly rely on his spells in the games, that he can't have it based around Fire.
My bottom line is:
Fire isn't a spell you MUST have out, you can play without it. I agree on that, and if you want to do it that way, then fine. Good for you if you can play without it and still succeed.
But don't come and say it's a 'chicken wuss' attack, because many fights between many players have shown that Fire is a very effective attack that can land you more hits. And thusly, many Cloud players agree that Fire is a useful attack and is worth your slot.

I find hanging near the ground, playing with quickmoves, dashes and Rising Fang's to be the best way to go about it. He should never really be that high up in air, it's not that his air game is bad but Cloud wants to have access to all 6 of his attacks so he can mix it up more - mostly because, as most of you should know as Cloud players, Cloud isn't exactly a hard to predict character.
