the staple moves Zidane needs is his SA. Other aerial moves can be interchanged. you can use long range ones if you like (Sol9) of use short range like tempest of vortex or storm impulse. you vary your BRv attacks depending on your enemy. For Hp attacks, having FE and SB is great especially if oyu've practiced landing those. for ground, remove any HP attacks you have since you can have rumble rush->meo tiwster or booster8->any aerial move (particularly SA->meotwister).

SB is a fantastic attack. Mages die, anyone with a really long startup frame dies, ground dashers: takes a little more work to do, but get in a straight line and fire it off. You can assist off of it too. Ftw!

Except that it has a shorter range than you'd expect, is extremely easy to Assist punish, can be avoided in mid-air by simply dropping, and sometimes doesn't even deal a HP hit even if the opponent is caught in the lightning.
Shift Break has its uses, for sure, and yes it's great for punish long startup moves, EX Core camping or if Zidane has 2 Assist bars (though the latter is rapidly diminishing with the rising popularity of Yuna/Aerith), but it's not a move to be throwing out willy-nilly.
Well I know, use sparingly, but it really can throw people off. The trick is to just pay attention to their GROUND position and watch their assist bar. It's horribly easy to punish if someone spams SB, but the occasional use of it has sometimes single handedly saved me.
Ex: fought a Kuja, I had about 500 Hp left. He had 4000... He had just used an Hp attack, his bravery at 0... I hadn't used SB until that instant. He smacked into one of the bolts, and was broken. I called out ifrit, did 3500 Hp. I then used Seph during the hitstun, followed up with a meo combo. One of my best comebacks EVAH!!!

just learn the max range with it and make the bolts spawn on the opponent

Oh that is So much fun to do! Seriously, it's really good as an occasional attack. I think it's definitely well worth the CP

So it seems like Zidane or more less has it good in terms of matchups.
He loses miserably to Ultimecia (who doesn't) and has a disadvantage against Exdeath / Squall / Prishe. Anyone want to discuss these matchups? Exdeath in particular is a huge headache for me, ever since they nerfed Free Energy's priority...
