It would entail Square Enix updating the game. So it would go like this
"A New update is availbile for DISSIDIA DUODECIM. Would you like to update to version --/-?"
>yes >No
if you clicked yes, you would probaly have a loading screen, then it would update it with that specific DLC characters data
If no, then you wouldn't be able to play with that character.
And now we fight like men! and women! and women who dress like men! Gilgamesh
Red Mage: "Job?! Risks?! You're a mass-murdering psycho!"
Black Mage: "..."
Black Mage: "If you think about it, that's really their problem."8-bit theater chaos FTW
Obviously not you. No one has found additional characters programmed in the game. All that's there is junk data. I'm sorry, but additional characters will not happen. Not only because of technical limitations, but that the idea of character DLC completely destroys the purpose of Square Enix making a Dissidia 3.
Spoiler:
Well, I suppose Cor, that they could add DLC characters, just that when you verse somebody online who doesn't own that character it'd be blacked out which I'm sure is possible. Not saying that it's likely, but it is possible.
I, myself, would love to see some IX and VI characters. Vivi <3

As i have said before the only way to make it possible to get DLC characters is to make a mandatory patch. They could release this over the PS store and online on their websites.
This then inserts the data for any DLC characters they wish to make, then once they release it, you download the DLC and it then triggers in game release.
Now i very much doubt this sort of thing will happen. I am sticking more to they won't do something like this and stick to BGM and costume releases which i am happy about. Purely because if they do release another Dissidia game they have more options to play around with. They can add more characters instead of adding them to 012 and thus ruining any chances of getting decent characters in Dissidia 3.
As for online play, it could quite simply allow the person with the extra characters not to be able to select them in the game. If i remember correctly someone without the DLC for a costume can not see it in game. So they could at least stop the player being able to select a character the opponent doesn't have.
And also as said there were characters found in the data of 012 before the official statement saying they were in it. Yes as you do say though there are no additional characters in the game as it stands now.

Isn't that what his green outfit is supposed to be?
No. Kefka's Alt 2 is based on an alternate Amano artwork; however, it does give the impression of his overworld sprite from Final Fantasy VI.
Spoiler:
im kinda confused on how the DLC costumes work. is it like aerith? where she is alrdy in the game and u hav to unlock her by buying prologus. or does ti actually download the costume having no data of it beforehand. cuz ive heard different things? =/
